Lake Bled is one of the most popular natural attractions of Slovenia located in the Julian Alps. Bikes will take us on the trail around the lake that leads to sightseeing rises – Castle Hill and nearby hills with splendid views over Bled Island and Karavanke Mountains in the distance. A fun fact is that Bled Island is the only natural island in Slovenia. Just under an acre in size, it now houses several buildings, including a 17th-century church dedicated to the Assumption of Mary. You can take an optional boat ride to the island if you feel like it. During summer months you can cool down in the lake or just chill on the Castle beach.

Not far from Lake Bled there is a 1.6 km long gorge connected with wooden bridges and viewing galleries among waterfalls, pools and cascades. A stone, single-arch, former railway bridge also towers above the Vintgar Gorge. We will use bikes to get there and enjoy a walk in the gorge admiring its unique flora that will enchant you.

If you feel like it, we can extend the tour and start biking from Bohinj Lake to Bled Lake and back, in that case the biking distance will be 50 km (30 mi).

It is also known for its well-developed karst phenomena.

Day 5: Triglav National Park Hiking – Vrsic Pass

Today we say goodbye to Bohinj and head to our next destination – the Soca River Valley. To get there we will have to drive over Vrsic Pass, the highest road pass in Slovenia. The road, built by Russian war prisoners during the 1st world war, runs through the heart of Julian Alps and the views from the road simply call out for a stop-over. It’s also the start point of our today’s hike to Slemenova Spica peak at 1911 m (6270 ft). A longer version is a hike to Mt Mala Mojstrovka (2332 m/7650 ft) which is one of the most quickly accessible and consequently most visited 2000-meter peaks in the central Julian Alps.

Apart from amazing alpine peaks that we will get the chance to observe during the hike, driving towards our next destination we will also get the chance to see the Soca River Valley from above and admire its full beauty. We can also decide to visit the Soca River source on the way down from the pass. In the evening we will settle in one of the guesthouses in Bovec town area situated in the valley.

Day 7: Postojna Cave or Skocjan Caves visit

We leave the Soca River Valley behind and explore the inevitable caves of Postojna or Skocjan depending on your choice.

Postojna is definitely the most popular one. It’s the largest show cave in Europe. While touring the 24 km (14 mi) long cave system, you will get to feel the magic of the underground world and experience a one-of-a-kind ride on Postojna Cave’s underground train. From the magical depths of Postojna Cave make your way to the fairytale world of knights. The Predjama Castle is another must-see Postojna Cave Park attraction – a veritable medieval miracle, perched in the middle of a rocky cliff for 800 years. Its unique location makes it one of the most fascinating castles in the world.

Skocjan Caves on the other hand are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This exceptional system of limestone caves consists of collapsed dolines, some 6 km (3 mi) of underground passages with a total depth of more than 200 m (656 ft), many waterfalls and one of the largest known underground chambers. The site, located in the Kras region (literally meaning Karst), is one of the most famous in the world for the study of karstic phenomena.
